Land of Hicksian Glory
by Richard Warren

Brahm, with designer Julian Land, pays homage to one of Britain's greatest interior designers by styling an apartment in Eaton Place with the influence of David Hicks, but with a contemporary twist.

'Draped over the lift entrance is a 4.6 metre deep red, glossy curtain. What makes this Hicksian is the dynamic colour (bright red was one of his favourites) and the curtain being oversized. What makes Land's re-interpretation is the softened geometrical shape of the curtain when swagged (it remains elegant, but not intimidating), the choice of material, which is 80 per cent metal and 20 per cent silk - a wholly new mix that he bought before the manufacturers had even placed it on the market.'

'Upstairs in the main bedroom, textural elements are more striking than the colours, The white, brown and blue colour scheme is mellow, but the pony hair covered side tables and the faux fur bed cover create a sense of indulgence. His boldest colour statement is in the third bedroom cum study, which is filled with red furnishings and accessories. The bathrooms are all white.'
